~Saturday Snippets~ Intrigue

I completely FORGOT to post a new Saturday Snippet yesterday! :o (In my defense, I wasn’t home Friday or Saturday.) I’ll post it now, and make sure I have next week’s scheduled ahead of time.

That brings me to which snippet to share. That’s often a hard decision for me. That said, I’ll select a random portion of...Intrigue. This portion is taken from the middle of chapter seven. Enjoy!

A trim little figure of equestrienne superiority erupted into the house. She twirled her shako hat on one finger, her smile of utter delight encompassing all those assembled in the great entry hall.

This was Gideon’s sister, Malvina realized. The way she carried herself would have been indication enough but the rippling scars covering the young lady’s cheek confirmed her identity.

Malvina was intrigued to note the disappearance of the charming smile as the young lady’s eyes lit upon the earl. Indeed, it was as though the light in her had been extinguished. They were suddenly faced with the epitome of a well-bred English lady.

“Hello, Holt. I hope your journey was without mishap?”

Her voice carried a distant note that was not lost upon Malvina and her son. Lady Brackney gave the earl a questioning look that he ignored and she had to pinch Wolf before he said something embarrassing, like mentioning the young girl’s scars.

“Our journey was uneventful, was it not, my dear?” he said in reply to his sister’s question. His brown eyes settled on Malvina, awaiting her agreement.

“Very pleasant,” she murmured.

“Sammy, love, this is my betrothed, Lady Malvina Brackney, and this is her son, Sir Beowulf. My sister, Lady Samantha de Witt.”

Samantha curtsied politely, smiling at his companions in an unselfconscious way that Malvina found curious.

“Where is Mother?” Gideon asked.

Samantha looked up at him. “She has sequestered herself in her apartments, Giddy.”

Malvina’s lips quirked. What an oddly disarming pet name, she thought. It didn’t suit the earl in the least.

Review Copies

If you like "clean" (no graphic sex) Regency romance and are willing to post a review, I'd love to send you a copy of Intrigue, Forgotten, and/or The 11th Commandment, which are all in need of some review love on Amazon, B&N, Apple, Smashwords, and/or Goodreads. This doesn't mean the review must be positive, only honest.

If you are interested in reviewing one or more of the three I just mentioned and you are able to download books from Smashwords, please comment here with your email address or email me at jaimeygrant [at] yahoo {dot} com with your request. I'm looking for a reasonable turnaround, but I also understand the demands of life. Your review must contain the fact that you received the book as a gift. This appeases the FTC. (I have heard that if you indicate it's a gift specifically from the author, Amazon will delete your review. Not sure what the deal with that is...)

I'll accept review copy requests through May 31. Thank you!

Oh, and if you've already read one or more of these, would you consider posting a review? I'd be ever so grateful.

RONÉ Award Finalists

SQUEE!!
The votes have been tallied and the finalists in the 2014 RONÉ Awards have been announced. There are so many wonderful books on this list and guess what? Intrigue made it (Historical: Post Medieval)!

Even better, my bestie's book, Dance with the Enemy, also made the cut in the Fantasy/Sci-Fi category! DOUBLE SQUEE!!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the RONÉ Awards, I'll briefly explain. It is an award given to the best in independently published books. The first step is a professional review, done by InD'tale Magazine. If the book rates 4 stars or higher and was published in the year specified, it's automatically entered. (Books published in 2013 are the ones being judged this year, for example.) Once the nominees are announced, they pass to the voting stage, where the public votes for their favorite books in each category. The top ones are then announced as finalists.

A trophy from last year.

The next step in the award process, the step we're on now, is professional judges. These lovely men and women (authors, publishers, editors, and others in the industry) will read the books assigned to them and decide which they feel should receive the stunningly gorgeous trophy for each category. And there are so many wonderful books/authors on the list! I can't even imagine how the judges will make their decisions. I do not envy them in the least! lol

The winners will be announced in July at the Romance Novel Convention in Las Vegas, NV. The RONÉ Awards ceremony is the best part of the convention with quality entertainment, lots of laughs, and lots of class. If it's the only part of the convention you can attend, it is the best part and so worth it. With InD'tale Magazine in charge of the awards, you know it will be great!

The Annual RONÉ Awards

Every year, last year being the first, InD'tale Magazine compiles a list of the books reviewed by them, published in the previous year, that garnered a 4-star rating or higher. The list of qualifying books published in 2013 has been announced and guess what?! Intrigue is among their number!! ♥

The first two weeks of voting have come and gone, and now Intrigue's category (Historical: Post Medieval) is up for vote until March 30. Please vote by clicking HERE. It only takes a moment if you're already a registered site member. If you're not a member, signing up is a painless process and absolutely free. If you'd rather not register, you can still vote. A Forgotten Blurb

Forgotten, and other Heartless tales is officially submitted to formatting genius Linda Boulanger. It will undergo some painless cosmetic surgery before I release it to you lovely readers. ♥

Meanwhile, I should share the official back cover blurb for this treasure, shouldn't I?

Loyalty...
Lady Michaella Harcourt's loyalty is unparalleled. Years after his death, she still pines for her lost love. The desire for a family, however, leads her to the Duke of Derringer with a request: arrange a marriage for her, to a man who won't require her heart.

Forgotten...
Gabriel has made a life for himself with the Frenchwoman who fished him from the water many years ago. He remembers nothing of his former life, but when bits and pieces begin to fall into place, he seeks answers. Hélène does whatever she can to fulfill his wish, even if it means losing him to the woman who haunts his dreams.

Introductions: A Heartless Conclusion...
Michaella's house party takes a turn for the intense when Lord and Lady Gabriel St. Clair attend. Old emotions resurface, sending certain guests into a panic. Meanwhile, the Duke of Derringer and his wife must overcome a crisis of their own.

Remember, Intrigue and Heartless are on sale for only 99¢ until Feb 28. Take advantage of the price now! ♥

~E-book Sale~ ♥ FREE to 99¢ ♥

Just a few book related updates for you, my lovely readers.

First and foremost, Intrigue received a glowing, beautiful, 4½-star review from InD'tale Magazine. It was completely unexpected, and so thrilling! (I always expect the worst. LOL)

"Writing that shouts "well above average" should never be missed, and Ms. Grant certainly has attained a lofty position with this story!" ~InD'tale Magazine

To celebrate, I've put Intrigue on sale. The price change hasn't fed through to all the stores yet, but at the time of this post, it's reduced at Amazon (US & UK), Apple, B&NSmashwords, and Kobo. It will soon follow to Sony and Diesel

Second, Heartless has been on sale for 99¢ since I revealed the cover for my upcoming release, Forgotten, and other Heartless tales. Seemed appropriate, considering the new book is tied very closely to Heartless. (For example, the heroine of the first story in this anthology is the sister of the heroine in Heartless. Yup, very closely tied together.)

"The richness and emotion of these characters will grab you by the heart and the story will not let you go!" ~InD'tale Magazine

Get Heartless at Amazon (US & UK), Apple, B&N, Smashwords, Sony, Diesel, and Kobo for only 99¢ until Feb 28.

As another "woo-hoo" announcement, Whispered Beginnings, the Clever Fiction Writers Anthology that boasts one of my exclusive Regency short stories, is now free. Follow the title to read an excerpt of my short story and for buy links.

And as always, My Lady Coward is free, The 11th Commandment is only 99¢ everywhere e-books are sold, and my one and only non-romance/fantasy short story The Dragon's Birth is also 99¢.

*All links open in new tabs or windows, depending on your browser settings. All linked titles go to the corresponding page on my site where you can find blurbs, excerpts, and buy links.

~Sweet Saturday Sample~ Intrigue

It is Saturday and that means it’s time for a Sweet Sample from one of my books. It’s been several months since I’ve had opportunity to do so, but I mean to get back into the habit.

Enough of that. Let’s get to the sample.

This is taken from Chapter Four of my newest Regency release, Intrigue. The heroine (Malvina) is engaged to a man she barely knows (Gideon), has a teenage son who is a wee bit unbalanced (Wolf), and is being blackmailed by a scoundrel (...we don't know his name at this point). Enjoy!

About a week after Wolf’s homecoming, Malvina received an unexpected, yet expected, visitor.

The weather was still balmy at the peak of the day. Malvina had taken to walking about unescorted in the woods near the house. She used the time to think and as her problems had increased of late, she had much to occupy her mind.

An insect buzzed close to her ear and she waved it away. As her arm came down, she was grabbed from behind. A hand closed over her mouth, stifling her cry of alarm and cutting off her air. Her captor dragged her backwards, into the trees, until they were hidden from the view of any casual passersby.

She struggled against the arm, desperate to escape as her air slowly dwindled, black edging her vision. Then a voice whispered close to her ear, “If you don’t scream, my lady, I will release you.”

After a brief nod she was released. She stumbled and nearly fell to the ground but her companion reached out and steadied her with a hand under her elbow.

“Where have you been?” she snapped, her eyes probing the shadows in an attempt to make out his features. “I began to think you had decided to leave me out of your plotting.”

“Hoping, more like,” scoffed the man. “Unfortunately for you, I still have need of you. I will contact you soon about your next assignment.”

“Very well,” she answered, knowing she had no other choice. What this man held over her head was enough to make her do just about anything he could think to request.

The man glanced around the wooded area with a distracted look on his face. A patch of sunlight lit his face and he stepped out of it, squinting up through the leaves overhead. His brow crinkled.

In that moment of brightness, Malvina caught ordinary features, handsome yet nothing out of the common way, dark brown hair peeking out from beneath his hat. Then he was hidden in shadow again.

“I hear you have a man staying with you. Care to explain that?” His eyes swiveled back to hers, sliding over her face and down to her bosom. He paused there, eyes narrowing. She could only assume he stared at the pendant she’d taken to wearing, the pretty little gift bestowed on her by the very man he wanted to discuss.

Malvina felt an overwhelming urge to kick him in the shin and run away. A childish desire, to be sure, but one she couldn’t help but feel. “I am engaged. You may wish me well.”

“Indeed?” he replied, his brows raised slightly. “And will he be a problem for you? I would hate to have to remove him from the scene because he put his nose where it doesn’t belong.”

“He will not be a problem,” lied Malvina. She schooled her expression into one of annoyance, trying to cover her desperate hope that Gideon would prove to be just that. But at the same time, she feared for him.

“And who is the lucky man? All I can uncover is a vague description and his abject laziness.”

“Does it matter?”

“It does if you want him to survive the night.”

She studied him for signs of an empty threat. She was used to such, having lived with a man who was quite fond of empty threats. Finding nothing but dark promise, she capitulated. “He is Gideon Mallory,” she told him, giving him the name her betrothed had given the headmaster at Wolf’s school.

A look of sheer amazement crossed the man’s face. He snorted a laugh that contained hints of genuine amusement. “Did you say Gideon Mallory?”

“Do you know him?” she asked, unable to hide her surprise.

“The question is, my dear lady, do you?”

~General Updates~ Intrigue, InD'Tale, RNC, Book Covers

Well, dang. I don't like that I'm getting into the habit of updating this blog only once a month. Not good. Things should get back to normal after August, when all the vacations and conventions and stuff are behind me.

I did it. I clicked the button.
Intrigue....
Intrigue (my next full-length Regency romance) is finally done and uploaded to KDP. It's currently "in review" on my KDP dashboard. Hopefully, by this time tomorrow, it will be available for purchase.

This one takes place between Deception and Entangled*. The hero is a secondary character from Deception. His friends include the Duke of Derringer, so of course, the morbidly attired, slightly eccentric duke makes an appearance.

  *Formerly known as Spellbound.

InD'Tale Magazine and RNConvention....
The lovely ladies from InD'Tale are hosting a casual gathering at the Golden Nugget Buffet in Las Vegas on August 8. It's so they (we) can get to know the lovely readers of InD'Tale Magazine. If you plan to be in Vegas for the convention, please consider gracing us with your presence. The exact time is yet to be determined.

More info on the event can be found HERE and info on the buffet itself can be found HERE

Book Covers....
I have joined forces with some seriously brilliant cover designers. Our fearless leader, Renée Barratt of The Cover Counts, started a facebook page called Cover Art Collective with the specific purpose of displaying the premade covers that many of us have available. So if you are an author in need of an affordable, quick, yet professional cover, please check out the ones listed there. ♥

*Each designer has their own album of available covers. These are NOT template designs. Each design is sold only once. When a design is purchased, it is removed from the page.

~General Updates~ New Releases, InD'Tale, The 11th Commandment

It's now time for another catch-up post.

New Releases...
I've revealed the cover for my upcoming release, Intrigue. This book is connected to my others in that it takes place between Deception and Entangled* and it features a rather memorable appearance by the Duke of Derringer (from Heartless).

So here's the official...
...for you lovely blog readers:

Look for this new title in July 2013. The book description can be found on my website HERE.

*Formerly known as Spellbound.

InD'Tale Magazine...
With the end of The 11th Commandment, there's now a new serial in InD'Tale Magazine, the first installment having officially made its debut in the June 2013 issue. Check your inboxes for your copy. If you haven't subscribed yet, you should do so now. It's still FREE.

The new story is a bit morbid, a bit dark, and a good bit more humorous than I'd originally intended. I knew body-snatching would be a dark subject and when the idea occurred to me for a woman to have this unlikely profession, it also occurred to me she'd need help doing it. Sisters, perhaps. Six sisters, in turns out, for a total of seven young women involved in one of the most despised activities of the time. Who knew they'd all have senses of humor, teasing each other, clearly a close-knit family, despite their very morbid job. It'll be interesting to see how it all turns out. ♥

On that note, I need to brainstorm a new idea for my next serial...

The 11th Commandment...
My previous serial Regency has been compiled and is now available for purchase. If you want the convenience of having the whole story on your e-reading device, it's only $1 USD to get it. The eBook is currently available on Amazon and Smashwords, with B&N, Kobo, Sony, Apple, and Diesel coming soon.

If you are an InD'tale subscriber, you can still read the whole story for free by accessing past issues in the magazine archive. (You must be registered and logged in to access the archive.)

I think that's the extent of my news at the moment. I am stressed, excited, overwhelmed, and a little nuts at the moment, but I think things will calm a bit after the Romance Novel Convention in August.

In the Editing Cave

Martin Hlauka (Pescan) [Attribution],
 via Wikimedia Commons
I spent the weekend in the editing cave. It wasn't until I crawled out that I remembered just how bright the real world can be.

What was I editing, you wonder? I was working on Intrigue, another of my full-length Regencies. It is connected to the others, #5 according to the list on my website

So now you are probably wondering why I publish my books out of order. It's been a source of annoyance for some of my fans, I know.

The answer to that is simple, really. I don't write them in order. I never have. I write them as I'm inspired to and that doesn't always happen in a chronological fashion.

That said, I'm hoping Retribution will be the next one I complete (#10 according to my list), though I also want to get Temptation out there soon (#4 on the list). I have a ton of work ahead of me so I better get back to it.

~Sweet Saturday Sample~ Intrigue

Time for another Sweet Saturday Sample and today's excerpt is taken from Intrigue. This is the prologue, and I apologize for the utter lack of actual "sweetness" in this excerpt. Intrigue is the next of my Regencies in line to be published and is going through edits. This portion may or may not end up included in the final draft.

A brief blurb (which also may end up totally reworked):
Espionage was no pastime for a lady. Yet, that's exactly what Lady Brackney finds herself embroiled in, up to her pretty white neck. To make matters worse, she accepts the proposal of a complete stranger just to save herself.... and her son.
Without further ado, Intrigue...

The carriage lurched to a halt amid curses and neighing horses.

“Stand and deliver!”

The lone passenger, a striking woman in her early thirties, sucked in a breath and screamed. Her voice reverberated in the small space, threatening to permanently damage her own hearing.

With a prayer trembling on her lips, she stepped down from the conveyance, her movements shaky and unsure. She stood, cowering and miserable, as the thieves rifled through her reticule and rummaged through the carriage.

As the moments passed, she began to relax, thinking maybe, just maybe, her prayers had finally been answered.

The sound of approaching hooves put paid to any such notion. Her stomach sank to her sensible halfboots as a man on a horse charged into the fray, brandishing a pistol and threatening the bandits with any number of dire consequences should they refuse to cease their theft.

A scream rose up in the victim’s throat, a cry of anguish and warning, quickly swallowed, hastily suppressed. If the boy simply let them take what they wanted and go, everyone would be safe.

As three other armed men stepped from the trees, the young man on the horse was made quickly aware that he was in over his head. He tossed his pistol aside as ordered and leapt down, more than willing to part with a few meager possessions in exchange for his life.

And that of the lady, too, of course.

When his pockets were emptied, one of the bandits made the young man kneel, adding humiliation into the mix. A gun was placed to his head.

The lady’s breath caught in her throat, unease making her stomach clench in pain.

She stepped forward. The bandit with the gun looked at her, his eyes dead in his gaunt face. She hesitated only briefly; she did not want anyone hurt. If she could stop this, she must try.

Just as she opened her mouth to protest, a shot rang out. She watched helplessly as the body of a boy not much older than her own son fell lifeless to the ground.

First Post of 2012 : Goals

Now playing in Jaimey's mind: Staind ~ For You

Everyone needs goals, especially writers. If we didn't set goals, we'd never get these stories out of our heads and onto paper. Thus, here are my writing goals for 2012:

  • Heartless: read, edit, read again, tweak, submit to TreasureLine Publishing for re-release.
  • Intrigue: read, edit, read, edit again, read, tweak, offer up to beta readers, read, edit, read, tweak, submit to TreasureLine.
  • Temptation: finish first draft, read, edit, read, tweak, submit to beta readers.
  • Retribution: finish first draft, read, edit, read, tweak, submit to beta readers who have strong stomachs.
  • Flawless: finish first draft, read, edit, read, tweak, submit to beta readers.
  • My Lady Coward: finish this episodic short story and submit to TreasureLine for publication.
  • Sable's Secrets: give Sable her HEA or at least put her out of her misery. (Don't know who Sable is? You can read about her HERE, HERE, or HERE.)
  • The Dragon Curse: read, edit, read, edit, read, edit... (yeah, this one needs work).
  • The Keeper and the Key: figure out what the heck is going on in this short story....sheesh.
  • Unnamed fantasy novel (co-authored with Linda Boulanger): finish my part and send to Linda so she can add hers.
  • SELL MORE BOOKS.

OK, so that last isn't a writing goal. Still, if I wanna keep this writing gig, I need to step up in the marketing department. Not my cup of tea but any job demands we do things we are not totally comfortable doing.

So what are your writing goals?

Not a writer? What are your reading goals?
