~Snippet Saturday~ Honor

You may have noticed I changed the meme title just a bit. Don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, considering Regency Wednesday has the day second. So Saturday Snippets has become Snippet Saturday. Hope that’s not too disappointing for anyone. ☺

Now that that’s out of the way, on to today’s snippet! ♥

I’ve chosen one of my favorite works this time. This one is my baby, the one and only book I had to write. This one wouldn’t leave me alone, wouldn’t let me rest. The first draft was completed from beginning to end within two months. Readying it for reader consumption took years.

Without further ado, a snippet from Honor. Enjoy!

(Taken from chapter three...)

Tears gathered in her eyes. Her father would beat her for her defiance. Sniffling, she accepted the handkerchief held out to her and spoke, the words tumbling out in a rush of suppressed panic. “A few months ago, my father informed me that he arranged a m-marriage for me. That is why I ran away. I just can’t do it!” The dam ruptured and she burst into tears.

Connor put his arms around her and held her against him. She stiffened at first but her muscles slowly eased and she buried her face in his chest. Sobs wracked her small frame and tears soaked his gold waistcoat. He removed her mobcap and released the severe knot of hair at her nape. He smoothed his hand over the shining tresses in a soothing manner until she quieted, her heartbreaking sobs becoming mere whimpers.

“Are you sure you can’t marry your father’s choice?”

Verena stiffened and drew away from him, disappointed that he would even suggest such a thing.

“Do you happen to know my father, my lord? Any man who enjoys my father’s good opinion is already beyond redemption.”

“Surely he can’t be that bad,” Connor insisted.

“There is none worse than Mr. Winters, I assure you,” she said in a frightened little voice that trembled slightly.

“Percival Winters?”

Verena bobbed her head in acknowledgment.

Lord Connor’s face and tone contained all the horror Verena could have wished, but she could take little comfort in that fact. Percival Winters may have enjoyed the title of gentleman in Society but nothing could be further from the truth. He was a cad, a cheat, and a scoundrel. His money was all that kept him accepted throughout the ton.

“Marry me instead.”

I hope you enjoyed that little taste of Honor. For more info on the book (as well as another excerpt) you can visit my site HERE. If this is enough for you, you can grab an e-copy of this book from Amazon (US or UK), B&N, Apple, Smashwords, or Kobo.

Thank you for stopping by! ☺

"My Writing Process" Blog Tour

There's this blog tour going around right now and it's all about the writing process. I've been tagged to share the ins and outs of my particular process and I will, in turn, tag a few others to participate. There are four questions involved and I will do my best to answer them.

Before I get into the questions, however, I should mention who decided to include me in this fascinating tour. The talented and always delightful Anna Katmore (who was known as Piper Shelly when I met her, lol) tagged me. I met Anna at the 2013 Romance Novel Convention in Las Vegas, NV. We had a lot of fun. More recently, I helped bring to life the cover for her upcoming release Neverland. That was a true pleasure and I'm thrilled that we'll be working together on the sequel's cover as well.

Now for those questions...

1. What am I working on?

I'm always working on several things at once, but my current inspiration involves the serial Regency I'm writing for InD'tale Magazine, Death Becomes Her. Here's the little blurby thing about it:

Melly lives in darkness, stealing bodies by moonlight to support her sisters and herself. Coming face-to-face with a new doctor, one who doesn't view the resurrectionists with quite the same acceptance as his predecessor, she must decide what is best for her family—a family who desires to choose for themselves.

Part 1 appeared in the June 2013 edition of InD'tale and the final installment will be in the June/July 2014 edition. Subscribers can go back through and read every installment by accessing the magazine archive. Subscriptions are currently free. (hint, hint)

That said, I'm also working on a short story called Samantha's Sin that is related. I plan to release it with the compiled edition of DBH. A tentative release date is set for early August 2014.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I write traditional Regency romance: romantic stories set in early 1800s Britain with no sexually explicit details. Seems simple and rather common, right?
The romance isn't always the main theme in my books. It's a major one, sure, but there's always something else going on that ends long after the romantic thread is tied, not always, but quite often. While I do leave out the sexual details, thus qualifying my books as "clean" or traditional romance, I often touch on certain subjects that are not sweet, and certainly not for young readers. Thus the reason I never refer to my books as "sweet" romance.

3. Why do I write what I write?

I enjoy a fluffy, sweet, positive romance, I really do, and I'm glad there are so many authors out there writing them. BUT...
I was tired of "clean" romances being nothing but fluff. I wanted romances that included some reality, especially of a time period that is often portrayed as idealistic, but I really didn't want to read the graphic sexual details. So I write dark and edgy Regency romance in the traditional style, stories with some grit, sometimes disturbing, but always with a "happy" ending. (Anyone who reads my books will see some recurring characters, and while those characters got their happily-ever-after in their own stories, their appearance in another story may not be so happy.)

4. How does my writing process work?

Most of my books started with a character. A face and name popped into my head and the character just took shape. Some started with a scene and a fairly clear character in mind. Some started with an idea based on a book I'd recently read. (For example, my book Honor was written because of how angry I got at someone else's book. I wanted something more realistic, something that made sense to me.) Some stories started with a title and one in particular (My Lady Coward) was initially inspired by a song. (Subsequent parts of that story were inspired by writing prompts from Clever Fiction, a site for readers and writers of short fiction.) So inspiration varies for me.

After the initial idea blossoms, I "pants" it. I write until inspiration leaves me and then I work on another story. I have folders of character bios and story ideas, handwritten scenes that may or may not make it into a final product, and research tidbits on specific aspects of the Regency. I try to write down anything that pops into my mind, then add that note to the proper folder for that book. It sounds organized, but it's really not. lol
At the moment I have over a dozen manuscripts started. Some will be finished and some will not. The ones that don't receive their ending are ones I view as practice of a sort. While I'd love to make every story in my head come to vivid life, time is not on my side.
And now I'm supposed to tag a few more writers to take part in this tour. Their articles will be posted on their blogs or sites April 7. ☺

Rachel's one of my favorite authors, one who lets me beta read her books and who beta reads mine in turn. I guess that sort of makes us critique partners, though we've never put a label on our authorly relationship. Her stories are mostly medieval romance set in a totally made-up world, aka medieval fantasy. And they are EXCELLENT! Her talents extend into book cover design too.

Linda's my bestie and has been since we met online a few years ago. Our friendship started after she read one of my short stories and offered to publish me. It was a fabulous beginning to an indescribable friendship. We met in real life for the first time last year. She's a great author whose mind positively thrives on the happily-ever-after of romance. Book cover design is also a passion of hers.

Baby Naming Contest!

YAY! My precious kitten had her babies very, very early this morning. The first was born just before midnight and the next five came into the world within 2-3 hours after that.

Here they are, numbered in the order they were born. Baby #1, a girl, has already been claimed and named Ticky (inside joke). Baby #6, a boy, was the loudest so I named him Foghorn, to be affectionately known as Foggy.

The other four, however, remain nameless. That's where you come in. :O)

Comment here (on the blogspot end of this post, not the Goodreads or facebook feed of it) with the name you'd like to bestow upon one of these little darlings. Be creative! With names like Stinkerbell (the momma), Ticky, and Foghorn, the others will need something just as clever (weird?) to retain their dignity amongst their peers.

If you have any questions about the contest (or the kittens), please ask. You may enter as many times as you want, each entry being a separate {unique} name. The most creative name will be selected and announced August 15 (the judges being my husband, my brother, my two children, and me) and that name will be given to one of the kittens. This contest is open to all!

As a bonus, we'll select our six favorite names. The commenters who submitted those names will each receive a coupon to download my newest Regency romance (Honor) for free from Smashwords.com. (What? You didn't think I'd pass up an opportunity to pimp my new book, did you?)

So, to sum up the rules:
  • Make sure you follow this blog, it's only fair. You have options: email list, Google Friend Connect, Networked Blogs, and/or "Subscribe to..." Just please make sure you're doing at least one of these things.
  • Comment here with a name, not on the Goodreads or facebook feed, but here on blogspot.
  • Include your email, so I can easily contact you if you win.
  • Multiple, unique entries are allowed. Please don't submit 20 names that only vary slightly from one another.
  • Open to all, regardless of where you live.
  • Deadline: midnight (eastern time), August 14; winners announced August 15.
  • I reserve the right to ignore any entry that is inappropriate (no dirty words or swears), common (please no Fluffy's or Spot's), or redundant (make sure you're not using someone else's entry). Thank you!
I think that covers everything. Any questions? If not, let the baby naming begin!!

Edited at 11:38PM to add:

It was brought to my attention that I failed to mention the genders of the babies. The only females are babies #1 and #5. I hope that helps. (Thank you, Kandy, for asking!)

And here's a video I just recorded, about a half hour before editing this post (please be patient as it loads):

Thank you, Rachel, for the idea. :O)

Release Party Success!

A word of warning: I'm inclined to use an excessive amount of !!!!! in this post. Forgive me if it gets out of control. :O)

Wow, what a day!! Yesterday was fabulous, made more so by sharing it with all my friends and fans at my online release party. The turnout was amazing and the interaction stimulating! I answered questions, gave away books and jewelry and just had so much fun! I hope it was just as fun for all of you who were able to attend. :O)

The winners will be announced on the TreasureLine blog (probably tomorrow) so keep an eye on that to see if you've won. If you just can't wait, pop over to the Novel Launch page and pick up a copy of Honor right away.

If you're in the mood for more party fun, you can stop by Novel Launch's newest release party for Pete Turner's thriller, Whisper A Scream. It starts Thursday morning, May 19, at 7:30am (Central Time) and lasts all day.

Thank you all so much for celebrating with me! (Oh, and please accept my apologies for the lack of Regency Wednesday post this week.) Until next time...

Happy reading, writing, and blogging!!!

How many books...

...are listed as WIPs on my website?

Hint: Click "Bookshelf" on my site. www.jaimeygrant.com

First commenter with the correct answer gets free eBook editions of both Honor and Betrayal.

GO!!

:O)

Unlocking a Sample

I have here one SIGNED copy of Unlocked, a multi-genre, young-adult-ish anthology that features some really great short stories from some up-and-coming authors. Two of mine are in this one, Assassin's Keeper and Survival. I want to give this away to one very special commenter.

How can YOU be that special commenter? Comment. That's all. Comment on this particular blog post and I'll draw a name for a winner, to be announced tomorrow. Remember to include your email address so I can easily contact you if you win.

Unfortunately, I can only offer this one to US residents, or those with a US mailing address. However, if you prefer eBooks to paperbacks anyway, you can download Unlocked for FREE from www.unlockedproject.com.

Stay tuned for more party giveaways. Meanwhile, don't forget the ones still open for entries (you have to click over to each post for the details on how to enter):

For the Fans

This is one I really wish I could post on facebook, but...oh well. We have two eBook copies of Honor reserved for two facebook fans.

There's two ways to win:
  1. Fan my author page on facebook, comment here on this blog post (with your email), and you're entered to win an eBook copy of Honor. If you're already a fan, comment here and you're entered.
  2. Fan my cover design page on facebook, comment here, and you're entered to win. Again, if you're already a fan, comment here and you're entered.
And as always, if you can't comment here on blogger for whatever reason (we all know blogger can be as quirky as facebook), drop me a line at jaimeygrant{at}yahoo{dot}com to let me know you've fanned one or both of my pages. Remember, there are two copies up for grabs here, one for a "Jaimey Grant" fan and one for an "Author's Art" fan. Fan them both for two chances to win. :O)

Entries will be accepted until Midnight tonight (Central Time). Winner will be announced here and on the TreasureLine blog tomorrow.

The first person to...

...correctly tell me what my favorite color is (and comments here, including an email address) wins an eBook copy of Honor.

Hint: Go to the "About Me" page on my website. www.jaimeygrant.com

GO!

:O)

Want a Chance to WIN?

The party's in full swing over at Honor's facebook party page. Stop by for virtual snacks and Q&A with me. :O)

Meanwhile, if you'd like the chance to win the lovely sterling silver and pearl pendant* pictured here (a replica of the pendant the heroine wears in Honor), simply add yourself to my email list. There's a nifty little spot in the right-hand sidebar (of this very blog) where you can enter your email address. You'll only get emails when I post to the blog, up to one email a day--and no, I don't post every day. It is a two step process so make sure you click the link you will get in your inbox to confirm the subscription.

Comment on this post to let me know that you signed up. Easy, peasy. Include your email address in your comment so I know how to contact you if you've won. If you can't comment or have trouble commenting, send me an email at jaimeygrant{at}yahoo{dot}com to let me know you've signed up. You can also leave a comment on the party page to let me know you've signed up. Just make sure to include your email since facebook's new rules won't allow me to contact winners through their messaging service. (Silly, silly facebook!)

I only have one of these to give away and the winner will be selected at Midnight tonight (central time), and announced tomorrow.

Was that clear as mud, or what?

*Pendant includes a matching sterling silver chain.

Virtual Release Party for Honor!!

My publisher, TreasureLine Publishing, is hosting a virtual release party for Honor and you're all invited! It starts Tuesday morning (May 17--is that today already!?) and lasts all day. Stop by the event page (on facebook) for more details and pop over to "like" the party page (also on facebook). There will be prizes and Q&A and virtual snacks! All giveaways and winners will be revealed on the TreasureLine blog or the Novel Launch site.*

And because I'm too excited to wait, I'll let you all in on a little secret. I'll be giving away a necklace, a replica of the silver and pearl pendant the heroine wears in the book. You'll have to check out the page tomorrow to find out how to enter.

Oh, we're giving books away too, never fear. ;O) Everyone who "likes" the party page will automatically be entered to win a copy of the book. More copies will be awarded throughout the day, at TreasureLine's discretion. Make sure you like the party page so you can keep up with all the festivities!

Hope to see you all there!

*Facebook no longer allows giveaways or contests to be "held" on facebook, nor do they allow the winners of giveaways to be announced on facebook. Due to this, there will be some site hopping involved in this party. My sincere apologies for this but it's unavoidable.

New and Crazy in My Blogging Scene

So the crazy part refers to me. Mostly. I started a whole new blog today, dedicated to one of my WIPs. Additionally, I updated a several other blogs, as they either had had no initial post or were severely out of date. Then I decided to revamp several of them as well. I've been a busy, busy girl today.

Check out my blogs for...

The Big Reveal

So here is the official cover for Honor, my soon-to-be released Regency romance. (I know, since the cover vote, the "big" reveal isn't quite so climactic, is it? lol)

I don't have a release date yet, but watch for this one soon from TreasureLine Publishing.

Blurb:

Lady Verena Westbridge would rather die than marry. When her father accepts the depraved Percival Winters on her behalf, flight seems her only option and entering into menial service the perfect hiding place. Resigning herself to serving her own kind for the rest of her life, she naively believes she is safe.

Lord Connor Northwicke arrives at a house party and rescues a young housemaid from the unwelcome advances of a brute. Feeling the need to be near her, he offers her friendship. But her disguise is undone and he must save her from her own father by doing the very thing she fears most. He must marry her.

But as Verena's past emerges in bits and pieces, fear threatens to overcome love. Verena must fight for her marriage...and her sanity.

Happy reading, writing, and blogging!!

~Regency Wednesday~ 1815 Window Dressing

My upcoming release, Honor (click HERE* for more info on that), starts in the latter part of 1815. Here is a plate from the January 1815 edition of Ackermann's Repository, and the accompanying explanation/description.

Plate 2. FASHIONABLE FURNITURE.
Library Window Curtain.
It is a common defect in building, attributable to the tax upon windows, that a sufficient number of them are not introduced for the purposes of cheerfulness; and there are many rooms lighted by so few, and the dimensions of them so small, that not only an insufficient supply of light is admitted, but the windows are too narrow, and their dressings too circumscribed to form proportions suited to the apartments. The annexed plate represents a window of this kind, with the added architectural finishings, by which it is so increased as to have the proportion of a Palladian or Venetian one, and a design for a curtain suitable to it is introduced in a style adapted to a library or eating-room. It is a design very applicable to some rooms which have but one window in each.**

**Taken verbatim from Ackermann's Repository, January 1815, page 55.

Vote For Honor's Cover!!

I need your help. I have three covers for Honor, two very similar covers and one slightly different one. I'm asking you to cast your vote for your favorite. Which one best catches your eye and makes you look again? Which one makes you wonder what the book's about? If you have any thoughts or critiques, please feel free to voice them. I'm asking because I need you.

Cast your vote in a comment below. The red number in the corner of each pic represents the voting number. (Obviously, they won't be part of the final cover.) Clicking the cover will enlarge it in a new tab.

As a special bonus, everyone who votes will be entered to win a copy of Honor once it's released, winner's choice of a paperback or an eBook. It doesn't matter where you tell me which one you vote for, whether it's here or on facebook or Goodreads or Twitter. Private messages (through facebook, Goodreads, or Twitter) or comments here are probably the most reliable way. Just make sure I know your vote and you'll be included in the random drawing.

I'll put a deadline on this of February 19 (three weeks). Votes and suggestions will be carefully recorded from now until that day, when the votes will be tallied. I may or may not reveal the "winning" cover at that time but the winning voter will be announced. Be sure to include an email address with your vote so I can easily contact you if you win.

Thank you very much for your help! Happy reading, writing, and blogging!

Beta Readers

Wilcox
A few weeks ago, I sent my upcoming release, Honor, to six of my close writer/reader friends (ones who are guaranteed to give me honest, critical feedback) to give the story a beta read, looking for loose ends and inconsistencies. On facebook, I asked for more beta readers and received four more responses.

I've already received half of those readers' opinions and so far, Honor's receiving 4 - 4.5 stars for the way it stands now. A few slight tweaks and it will be a 5-star read for sure.

I haven't gone over every detail of the critiques yet but the readers all put a few suggestions in the body of their return email. Already, a few of those suggestions stood out as "Oh yeah!" moments, changes that I know will be the right move even if they're only mentioned that one time. Other suggestions just don't feel right and this is definitely the time to "trust my gut," as it were.

All in all, this is turning out to be a great process and I love the reactions I'm getting. I've written a story that keeps the reader engrossed, makes them forget to watch for flaws, and is a joy to read. I'm thrilled with these responses and maybe one day I'll even reveal the reason I wrote Honor.

Happy reading, writing, and blogging!

News and Updates and Giveaways Galore

News.

Deception's eBook debuted in August, going live on Smashwords and in Amazon's Kindle Store. It's only $4.99, a marked contrast to the $14.95 paperback. (But with a cover that gorgeous, who wouldn't want a hold-in-your-hands copy?) ;o)

Unlocked's paperback went live on Amazon. Those of you who were awaiting the Amazon edition, now's your chance to get it!

Heartless has been picked up by TreasureLine Publishing and so will receive a new cover, interior layout, and a bit of editing. (OK, so nothing's quite "official" yet, as I've not signed the contract, but that's just a formality.) The new cover will be revealed when I'm given the OK by TreasureLine.

Updates.

I'm working hard on editing Honor so I can submit it to my publisher. Meanwhile, I've been distracted by Retribution and tapping away on that so it can make its way out into the big bad world by next year. Covers for both are also in the works.

Giveaways galore.

Jewelry is the featured giveaway this month in the Unlocked group on Goodreads. Join to find out how to win a "key" necklace in September's contest. As always, visit www.unlockedproject.com to download your free PDF copy of the anthology.

I will be holding my own giveaway for Unlocked just as soon as my brother (of JaysDesign Jewelry) has finished the key necklace I've ordered from him. Oh, and after I've ordered/received a few copies of the book itself. I'm excited to see it!

I will hold another contest when I reach 100 blog followers. I have yet to decide what the prize will be but it will be a good one, I promise. Only 10 more followers to go!

That's it for me...for now. Happy reading, writing, and blogging!!

I Made a Mistake. I'm Sorry.

With the receipt of a less than glowing 3-star review, I have come to the realization that I may have made a tactical error. In releasing my books out of order, I have caused preventable confusion. In failing to market them as a series, I have caused even more. This was nearsighted of me and I apologize for it.

Since I can't undo the damage I've done, here's a list of my currently released titles in the order they *should* be read:
  1. Betrayal (1816-1817)
  2. Deception (1818)
  3. Spellbound (early 1820)
  4. Heartless (late 1820)
  5. Redemption (1821)
It seems, however, that I've made the mistake of setting myself into a course that I can't alter. The next book up for release is Honor, a story that takes place a year or so before Betrayal. Part of me never wanted to release Honor but readers have demanded Connor's story. He is an intriguing secondary character and probably deserves his turn in the limelight. It will be taking another step back in time, however, to make his story available. You see my dilemma.

In conclusion, I apologize for this error. I pray my readers are not too upset with me for overlooking the possibility of this result.
