~Regency Wednesday~ Miles vs. Kilometers

The following is a crossover post (July 31, 2011) from my Heartless blog

Usage des Nouvelles Mesures 1800One of my beta readers questioned why I used miles instead of kilometers in Heartless. Her question actually floored me; it was something I'd never really thought about. I knew miles to be the unit of measurement used during the Regency but I wasn't sure when kilometers came into use in Britain.

So I decided to look it up.

The metric system was created in France in 1790 and adopted by the French government in 1795, though the common people weren't required to use it until 1840. (Strange that they'd be worrying about units of measure in the midst of the French Revolution, but humans ever were odd creatures.) According to Wikipedia, "...the United Kingdom announced its metrication program in 1965..."* This definitely would not allow me to use kilometers in a Regency.

*For more info on the metric system, check out the article called History of the Metric System at Metric! Metric!; A Brief History of Measurement Systems (PDF located at standards.nasa.gov); Wikipedia article History of the metric system

Imagine my surprise...

a follow-up to my previously published article Imagine my disappointment...

Many of you are aware I was interviewed several months ago by Affaire de Coeur magazine. That fell through, as detailed in the aforementioned article.

At least, I thought it had...

March/April 2012 issue of Affaire de Coeur Magazine
screencap of cover from AdC's site
Imagine my surprise when blogger informed me I had a comment awaiting moderation. (Comments left on posts over one month old must be moderated before they can be posted to the blog, as per my settings.) A lady associated with AdC took the time to comment, assuring me that my interview couldn't go into the previously promised Jan/Feb issue (she apologized for that) but was instead published in the Mar/Apr issue. She also made a point to reassure me that TJ MacKay (interviewer and writer of the clean romances article that appeared in the Jan/Feb issue of AdC) did indeed receive credit for the interview. This is a relief to me, though I can't imagine why they'd have taken credit from her for the articles that appeared in the Jan/Feb issue of the magazine in the first place.

Ah well. All's well that ends well, right? I ordered a print copy of the magazine and I now await its arrival. I'm nervous about it, not entirely sure what to expect. While I realize (and accept) that articles can get dropped from magazines, or pushed back to a later issue, I just don't understand not giving credit where credit is due.

So again, I'd like to thank TJ MacKay for all her hard work and effort. And thank you to Pam of AdC for taking the time to contact me and let me know the interview was published. ♥

~Regency Wednesday~ Locksmith's Daughter

My 1811 Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue defines a Locksmith's Daughter simply as a key

I know there's more to it than this but that was all the inspiration I needed to pen a short story titled The Locksmith's Daughter. It's a contemporary romance, a first for me. Can't say I'll ever do it again, but it was fun to write at the time. (Contemporary just isn't my thing.) I plan to list this short for sale, eventually, as a $0.99 download. At the moment, it's far less than 5000 words and I think I'd like to add a bit to it before releasing it.

Just a little update...

I don't really have anything to say at the moment. I just wanted to assure everyone in bloggerworld that I am still around. I've been distracted. A little bummed, perhaps, but mostly distracted.

Watch for a new Regency Wednesday post this coming Wednesday. It's short and for that I apologize. But I've neglected my blogging for long enough. I need to get back to my weekly posts, even if they're just quick tidbits here and there.

♥ Happy reading, writing, and blogging!! ♥
